Available evidence suggests that the timing of administration of conventional NSAIDs has no significant effect on postoperative pain outcomes following TKA. Therefore, studies of conventional NSAIDs are presented in the Postoperative Systemic Analgesia section, except where studies compare different times of administration.
Conventional NSAID, timing and route of administration
Pre-operative oral versus postoperative IV
One study compared pre-operative oral tenoxicam (40 mg) plus IV placebo after surgery and IV tenoxicam (40 mg) on postoperative day 1, followed by oral tenoxicam (20 mg) on postoperative days 2–8 (n=34), with pre-operative oral placebo plus IV tenoxicam (40 mg) after surgery and IV tenoxicam (40 mg) on postoperative day 1, followed by oral tenoxicam (20 mg) on postoperative days 2–8 (n=34) ((Eggers 1999); LoE 1)
